Pre-existing conditions: a dread to care and adequate insurance coverage?

Often when a person buys visitor insurance, he comes across a fear. Though, Insurance itself means a measure to mitigate and to be able to properly handle the risks and unexpected circumstances, but visitors suffering from conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart-ailments etc. are concerned about the coverage of these health conditions. At the time of purchase of travel insurance, they want to make sure their plan covers treatment, prescription costs, lab tests etc. arising due to these health conditions which probably have existed from long before the day of insurance purchase.

Some of the ailments that are considered to be Pre-Existing are:

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease
  • Cholesterol
  • Alzheimer
  • Epilepsy
  • Acne
  • Diabetes

Since the nature of Pre-Existing conditions is such that they exist prior to insurance period, the insurance service providers end up paying more than they earn through premiums received from such clients. Therefore, not all plans cover pre-existing conditions adequately. But, no insurance plan covers pre-existing condition is a huge myth.

Often, prospective visitors with pre-existing conditions have complained or observed that they have been charged higher premiums or their benefits have not been made available to them. They feel that the existence of these health conditions is a burden on insurance companies and it’s a hurdle in the path towards their care and adequate insurance coverage. This may be partly true but not entirely. Insurance companies provide coverage for pre-existing conditions too. They have different criteria and hence different coverage.

Pre-Existing conditions are covered in both Fixed Coverage plan as well as Comprehensive Coverage plan. Fixed coverage plans may be cheaper but it should also be noted that they cover fixed conditions and till a certain point. However, Comprehensive coverage as the name suggests is more flexible and offers better coverage. Hence, it is costlier than the former. Inbound guest, Visitors care, Inbound USA and Inbound Immigrant are names of some of the fixed coverage insurance plans that cover pre-existing conditions. Liaison Continent Plan –A, B, E, F, Atlas America, Atlas International, Patriot America, Patriot International are a few names of the Comprehensive coverage plans covering pre-existing conditions for non-US or US resident travelers traveling outside US or to US. Details (benefits, summary, claims, renew policy, exclusions) about these plans can be read here.
